    Notice is hereby given that all vessels requiring a pilot for entry to the River Tyne should proceed to the designated pilot boarding area in position 55 degrees 02.0 minutes N 001 degrees 20.2 minutes W. All vessels awaiting their pilots should not proceed any closer to the piers unless otherwise directed by Tyne VTS or Tyne Pilots onboard the Pilot launch.

Navigation Notices are issued by the Port Authority as a means to ensure the safety of navigation on the River Tyne They may simply inform, offer advice, or occasionally warn, mariners of non-standard situations, events or occurrences, anywhere on the Tyne from a mile outside the Piers to the tidal boundary at Ryton. Sometimes instructions will be included in the notice. Generally they refer to a specific location but unless specifically excepted, they apply to all vessels big and small, and to any person in charge of a vessel; be that the owner, operator, skipper, or master. As the aim is to enhance the safety of navigation for all, compliance with any reasonable instructions contained in the notices is expected. However it should also be noted that failure to do so may, in certain circumstances, lead to an offence being committed and leave the person in charge of the vessel liable to prosecution.
