Dredging is the movement and/or removal of sediment from the river bed, usually undertaken to maintain the depths of the river channel and berths.
The Port of Tyne is responsible for the safe navigation of the river, which may include dredging the central channel as appropriate, whilst owners and operators are responsible for maintaining the dredging of their own berths.
