Cruises & Ferries
The Tyne has a long established history of short cruise services to Europe and the Baltic. Furthermore the Port of Tyne was voted runner up Cruise Port of of the Year 2008 at the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards.
Facilities at the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal include two RoRo berths, with covered walkways, a purpose built cruise berth, secure car parking and automated baggage handling. The passenger lounge provides seating for 700 with 6 cruise and 6 ferry check-in desks and capacity for 2,000 passengers in a turnaround call.
With high security (ISPS Restricted Area) including Customs and Immigration and just a short walk from Royal Quays shopping outlet with bars, restaurants and cash points, the Port's Passenger Terminal offers easy access into the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.
In addition, excellent freight facilities are available these include a 3,500m2 transit shed; a weighbridge, 10 acre operational area, and the Port of Tyne undertake stevedoring operations, as well as offering groupage and warehousing.

- Repairs - from light engineering up to dry-docking for 250 metres plus vessels
Gangways
- 20 metres gangway; requires entrance 1.5 metres plus wide; heavy duty; useable up to 6 metres elevation
- 15 metres gangway, requires entrance 1.15 metres plus wide; heavy duty; useable up to 4.5 metres elevation
- 7 metres gangway, (lighter type)
Baggage Handling
- Crane + Cages available, 500+ bags per hour achievable
- Conveyor rates up to 750+ bags per hour achievable; Maximum elevation 4.5 - 5.0 metres
- MAFI flat's and purpose built baggage wagons available for transport to / from terminal
Depths
- Main channel maintained depth of 9.1 metres, this allows:
- Vessels up to 8.5 metres to enter virtually without restriction
- Vessels up to 10 metres will be tide dependent
- Vessels up to 12 metres plus need high tide for entry
Lengths
- Vessels in excess of 350 metres have been handled on the Tyne, but the practical limit is the 360 metres diameter turning circle at Jarrow (3.5 miles from the sea) allowing:
- Vessels up to 300 metres to swing with tugs
- Vessels of around 160 metres may swing off the passenger berths
