GENERAL
• The Port's turnover in 2011 was almost £60m
• As at December 2011, 450 people worked for the Port in a diverse range of occupations
• In December 2011 the Port of Tyne was accredited with Investors in People
• The Port's land and property portfolio covers over 275 hectares (660 acres) on both sides of the Tyne with nearly 60 businesses based on the site
• The historic Tyne Dock has been infilled using spoil from the second Tyne Tunnel and is creating a further 6 hectares (14 acres) of useable land
• After a £5m investment by the Port of Tyne in 2011 the river channel is at its deepest ever level at 10 metres
• The River Tyne handled 5.3m tonnes in 2011, of which 92% was handled at Port of Tyne berths
• The Port of Tyne has 3 rail terminals
• The Port has HM Customs approval for EuroTunnel meaning goods can travel by train directly to Europe via the Channel Tunnel

CARGO - Cars
• The UK's number 1 vehicle port for exports and the 5th largest vehicle handling port in Europe
• The Port's three vehicle terminals can hold over 25,000 vehicles at any one time
• The Port of Tyne handled almost 700,000 vehicles in 2011 to destinations across the globe


CARGO - Conventional and Bulk
• The Port's new £23m wood pellet storage and transport facility - the largest in Europe - can handle up to 1.5m tonnes per year
• The Port handled over 3.5m tonnes of bulk cargo during 2011, including grain, scrap metal, coal and wood pellet fuel
• Up to 13 metres of water is available at Riverside Quay
• The Port can accommodate 83% of the world's bulk carrier fleet
• The Port of Tyne is the 4th largest coal handling port in the UK


MARINE
• The Port of Tyne is responsible for the safe navigation of a 22 mile stretch of the River Tyne, comprising 19 miles of river and 3 miles of sea outside the piers
• In 2011 there was a total of 4,732 shipping movements on the River Tyne
• Over 600 small craft are registered on the River Tyne

CRUISE AND FERRY
• Port of Tyne can accommodate 95% of the world's cruise ships
• 37 cruise ships visited Port of Tyne in 2012 and already 34 are provisionally booked for 2013
• Port of Tyne was accredited with UK's Best Port of Call by Cruise Critic in 2011/12
• Almost 600,000 passengers used the International Passenger Terminal in 2011


LOGISTICS
• The Port has 49 trucks and 135 trailers in the fleet
• 49 Port of Tyne trucks travels 4 million miles per year
• The Port has 56k sq metres (603k square feet) of fully secure, state of the art warehousing
• The 8 hectare (19 acre) container terminal has a storage capacity of around 4,200 containers at any time
• The Port's container terminal handled in excess of 70,000 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) in 2011
• 2 feeder services operate from the Port of Tyne providing connectivity to Felixstowe, Grangemouth, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Gdansk

REGIONAL AND COMMUNITY IMPACT
• Port of Tyne has invested more than £120m to develop the port over the past 10 years
• The Port of Tyne added £467m in value to the North East economy in 2011 and supported nearly 9,500 jobs in the region
• Included in the £467m is £45m attributable to passengers coming to the region through the Port's International Passenger Terminal at North Shields
• An estimated 50 community groups / 10,000 people benefited from the Port of Tyne's charitable and community support programme in 2011
• The Port of Tyne Fund has given £150,000 to good causes in the last 5 years

ENVIRONMENTAL
• The Port is a key partner in the Clean Tyne Project - over 220 tonnes of debris removed in 2011
• The Port of Tyne's Environmental Management System is certified to the ISO 14001 standard


HEALTH AND SAFETY
• The Port of Tyne's Health & Safety Management System is certified to the OHSAS 18001 standard
