Mike Nicholson
Harbour Master
Born and educated in the North East of England Mike joined the British Merchant Navy in 1979 serving his initial apprenticeship with Shell Tankers UK Ltd. He gained his first watch keeping certificate in 1982 and served as Third Officer on the Tanker "Etrema".
Joining Buries-Markes of London he rose to the rank of Chief Officer before leaving to take a position with James Fisher & Sons of Barrow where he was appointed to his first command - the Heavy Lift ship "Kingsnorth Fisher" in 1990. In 1994 he came ashore to begin training as a river pilot on the Humber. Leaving the Humber in 2002 as First Class Pilot, and after a short spell at sea as Master on Guernsey Shipping's "Burhou", Michael took up an appointment as Harbour Master/Pilot in the Port of Seaham.
He was appointed Harbour Master of the Port of Tyne in October 2003. A member of the Nautical Institute, Mike is also a Younger Brother to the Corporation of the Newcastle upon Tyne Trinity House.
